2017 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey Chambertin 1er Estournelles St Jacques$64.99
The 2017 vintage seems to be going in the right direction. The bottles we have recently tasted have appeared to be filling out nicely with excellent balance and gorgeous forward fruit. They may likely not shut down and should supply a decade or more of exceptional drinking. Frederic Esmonin once know for good value, but rustic red Burgundies has upped his game in the last few years. The addition of a new bladder press that can control extraction is likely the main reason why the wines are more elegant and balanced. The Domaine is also using some of the best French oak barrels from Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, which are very fine-grained barrels, and reduce the oak tannins in the wines. The 2017 Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles St Jacques is gorgeous wine as Burghound’s review echoes below and should provide excellent drinking over the next decade or more!
Burghound 91 pts Outstanding! A fresh and decidedly more elegant nose reflects high-toned notes of pomegranate, red cherry, and a lovely blend of floral and forest floor scents. There is a lovely sleekness to the delicious, caressing and well-detailed flavors that deliver slightly better depth and persistence on the stony finish where a touch of wood influence arises. This is quite good and worthy of consideration
