2017 Domaine Glennon Pinot Noir Willamette Valley$34.99
In a year where there has not been much globally to be excited about, some diligent wine-makers have fashioned some incredible wines for us to enjoy. The 2017 Glennon Pinot noir is a great example of this with its elegance, balance, purity, and sense of place. This was a tremendous find for us in 2020, with lots of positive customer feedback; thus its gets our bid as the top new Oregon Pinot Noir discovery of 2020!
We love tasting our client’s wines, and typically they are pretty good. The 2017 Domaine Glennon is exceptional. A red Burgundy lovers Pinot Noir made by one of the best wine-makers in Oregon, Marcus Goodfellow, and our long time customer Darin Kendrick. The fruit comes from J Wrigley Vineyard (Proposal Block) McMinnville AVA of Yamhill County and Bednarik vineyard (Home Block) Coastal Range northwest of Gaston, Oregon.
Both of these vineyards are farmed sustainably, with the J Wrigley vineyard planted in 2006. Bednarik's cool coastal climate vineyard was planted in 1988 to two Clones Pommard and Wadenswil (Swiss Clone), both on their own rootstock. The Wrigley vineyards' more abundant fruit is balanced and nuanced ideally by the cooler Bednraik vineyard site.
This wine sees about 70% whole cluster fruit, fermented with native yeast, and sees a long elevage in barrel with about 1/3 new oak. This Pinot Noir is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only 13% alcohol. This sounds great in words, but how the wine delivers is another story. Simply put, this is a red Burgundy lovers Pinot Noir. This wine is one of the most incredibly elegant, balanced, and sophisticated young Pinot Noir’s I have ever tasted from Oregon. Aromas of red flowers, red berry, red cherry, spice, forest floor, and earth explode from the glass. The refined palate has a polish with every aspect in perfect harmony. I like to keep young wines open for several days to help me get an idea of the evolution, and quite frankly, this wine was drinking so well I thought for sure it would not be any better the next day. Well, I was surprised it was just as good day two and even better day three! A perfect example that well-balanced wines can age incredibly if you can keep your hands off it. A great bottle and highly recommended for all lovers of elegant and complex Pinot Noir. We are the only retailer that has this wine in the USA!
