The 2017 rendition of Marc Hebrart 's Special Club is excellent, and we have some late-release magnums to offer today. For many years, it's been one of our favorite Special Club bottlings, with Marc Hebrart being a member of the Club Trésors de Champagne (Special Club) since 1985 and has continued their presence among the select producers in the club after Marc's son Jean-Paul assumed control. The blend here is 55% pinot and 45% Chardonnay from the villages of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ 1er Cru (65%), Aÿ Grand Cru (25%), Oiry Grand Cru (5%), and Chouilly Grand Cru (5%). Champagne expert Richard Juhlin expresses that Mareuil-Sur-Aÿ should be a Grand Cru village, and compared to the Champagnes of Ay, they are almost indistinguishable. The 2018 vintage is showing great now, producing Champagnes with incredible density and freshness, which are aging quite well. The Marc Herbrart Special Club is made to be an intense, powerful, dense, and concentrated Champagne with superb balance and complexity that seems to like a few years in the bottle before being opened. Another fabulous example from Marc Hebrart: we have very low pricing today for these magnums, and it's an excellent one to enjoy now and over the next decade or more.
JebDunnuck.com (Audrey Frick) 95 points! " The 2017 Champagne Special Club Brut is 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of Oiry, Chouilly, and Avize, and the 1er crus of Dizy. The nose is pretty and forward with bread dough, quince, and peach, and it has fresh and generous fruit on the palate that fills throughout the finish, with an energetic mousse, as well as notes of lime candy, white flowers, and fresh salinity. It has a fair bit of length and a bit of white pepper spice. drink 2024-2044. (Drink between 2024-2044)"
Antonio Galloni 93 points! "The 2017 Brut Spécial Club 1er Cru is a very classy, understated Champagne. Soft, silky contours, lifted aromatics and an exceptionally fine mousse are some of the signatures. Tasted from magnum, the 2017 is an absolute delight. It is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted from Marc Hébrart. The 2017 is just a bit light, but its balance is beyond reproach. It has enough freshness to drink well for at least a number of years. Tasted from magnum. Disgorged: January 18, 2022. (Drink between 2022-2029)"
John Gilman 92+ points! "The 2017 Marc Hébrart “Special Club” Brut Millésime is composed from a blend of approximately seventy percent pinot noir and thirty percent chardonnay. It was disgorged in December of 2020. The wine offers up a lovely nose of apple, white peach, bread dough, a touch of raw almond, a fine base of soil and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is bright, young, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a good core of fruit, zesty acids, elegant mousse and a long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is still a puppy and needs some time in the cellar to loosen up and drink with generosity, but it has lovely constituent components and is going to be a fine bottle once it has blossomed. (Drink between 2025-2050)"
