We have an incredible deal on a latecomer from one of Germany's great producers. Markus made two versions of the Saarburger Rausch in 2017, a two-star version and a three-star version with two-star just a point behind the three-star and available at a fraction of the price. Most notably farmed by the producer Ziliken who owns the majority of the vineyard, but his version, while very good, can be pricey. Saarburger Rausch is a 25-hectare vineyard with a southeastern exposure comprised of Devonian slate, basalt, greywacke, and red earth soils. This vineyard produces haunting wines with fantastic slate and fruit expression that are nuanced yet carry an intensity. Excellent balance of sweetness, Molitor's cap colors indicate sweetness level rather than quality, but the two go hand in hand, with his gold caps being his sweeter and typically higher quality wines. 2017 was a big year for Molitor, with some of the most starred wines he has produced in a single vintage. This wine has almost disappeared from the market and what can be found is very expensive, but we were able to get some bottles at original pricing and wanted to share the savings with our clients.
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 98 points! "The 2017 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Auslese ** (Golden Capsule) is intense and concentrated on the fresh and piquant nose that indicates fine botrytis with lemon confit and pumpernickel notes. Lush and smooth as well as refined and piquant on the palate, this is an incredibly fruity and mouth-filling Auslese with great finesse and a lightweight but intense and aromatic body. The finish is intense but delicate, full of layers and finesse. A gorgeous Auslese from the Rausch in Saarburg. Tasted in April 2019."
