The 2017 Taurasi Radici Riserva comes from one of Campania's most historic estates, founded in 1878 and still family-run today. Mastroberardino was instrumental in preserving native varieties post-WWII, with Radici first released in 1986 to highlight Aglianico's potential. The fruit is sourced from estate-owned vineyards in Montemarano and Mirabella Eclano on calcareous clay soils at 1300–1800 feet elevation. The 2017 vintage was warm and dry, yielding lower quantities of intensely flavored, structured fruit. After fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was aged for 30 months in a mix of French and Slavonian oak, followed by extended bottle aging. The result is a firm, age-worthy Taurasi with dark cherry, licorice, leather, and mineral notes, showing ample power yet a wonderfully balanced character. It's an excellent pick for those looking to try one of the best examples of the long-lived southern Italian reds at a great price, and this is showing great now after some extra time in the bottle!
James Suckling 96 points! "Complex and deep character with ripe blackberries, raisins, dried roses, dark chocolate, toasted walnuts, dark licorice and wild mushrooms with a little bit of tar. Full-bodied, layered and compact with a broad and velvety tannin structure that lasts long on the palate. Classy, reserved style with hits of sweet tobacco at the end. Needs three to four years to completely come together."
Vinous (Eric Guido) 94 points! "Dark and intense, the 2017 Taurasi Radici Riserva smolders up with a mesmerizing blend of crushed ashen stones, graphite, lavender and dried wild berries. This enters the palate lean at first, gaining energy through a core of tart citrus and savory spice as tart red fruits saturate the senses. The 2017 leaves the mouth reeling with a web of fine tannins and a twist of sour orange that puckers the cheeks. This is just a baby today, but it has the balance to mature beautifully over time."
