We have been truly impressed by the wines from the Rippon estate in Central Otago New Zealand. Their mature vines Pinot Noir has been a big hit which we have sold a nice chunk of at $49.99 (Decanter 96). Now we have available to sell their mature vine Riesling that rivals some of the greats of the world including some top German GG’s we have tasted. The vines are very old and grow into a bed of schist. The microclimate around the Rippon estate is diverse and tucked away in a valley next to a lake, with tall snowcapped mountains surrounding. The grapes on the estate are all sustainably grown, and this is one of the most picturesque wine growing regions of the world. The climate makes for warm days but very cool nights which the Riesling grapes thrive in. The aromas of this wine are white flowers, liquid minerals, citrus, flint, and saline. The palate is super fresh and focused, with excellent acidity and tons of dry extract that linger on for minutes. This is the prefect wine for shellfish in general, spicy Thai, Indian, or Chinese food. It will also pair well with rich sauces where you need a wine to cut through the food. A stunning bottle of bone-dry Riesling that should age effortlessly for a decade. A nice James Suckling review below as well!
James Suckling 96 points! Beautiful clarity of aromas in the grapefruit and lime-peel zone. Then abundant stony, flinty, wet rock complexity. Immensely fresh palate, this is full of life and has a very long, seamless run to a dry, flavorsome finish. Drink or hold. *Top 100 New Zealand Wines of 2018* (10/2018)
