Here is a first for Envoyer, an Austrian representation of Sauvignon Blanc from Zieregg right on Slovenia's border. The Shell-limestone soils here are unbelievably well suited to Sauvignon Blanc, and for 60 years, the Tement family has been making some of the best white wines you've probably never heard of. This comes from a single vineyard where the vines are 40+ years old and is considered the most valuable vineyard in Temet's possession. The complexity, structure, and finesse of these wines are on par with the best examples from the Loire with incredible limestone Minerality. This is a bottle that can age for over 15 years, like some of the world's best Sauvignon Blancs. 2017 was very concentrated with tiny berries on the vines due to some earlier challenges in the growing season. Still, the resulting wine is outstanding, and winemaker Armin says its the best since 1990. Such a rare wine to find here in the states, and we were fortunate to grab a few cases, which are some of the only bottles available outside of Germany and Austria.
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 97+ points! "Bottled in late April 2019, the 2017 Ried Zieregg Sauvignon Blanc offers a deep and coolish, spicy, flinty and herbal, very intense but well-defined and elegant bouquet with interwoven fruit, juniper and stony aromas. Terribly deep and spicy, full-bodied and powerful, with great purity, lingering salinity and mineral tension, this is a dense and powerful, tightly knit and concentrated, phenolic, structured Ziergegg with great aging potential. Tasted in May 2019."
