We had a great visit at Walter Hansel winery last month conducted by their vineyard manager and assistant wine-maker Jesse Torres. For me, the standout was their Cuvee Alyce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Pinot noir was quintessential Russian River with excellent fruit yet exceptionally well balanced with everything in proportion. If you don't like this wine, you better not drink Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir has just been released, and the quality here was astounding for the price. It's as good as any of the $100+ Russian River Pinot Noirs on the market that I have tasted. Aromes or red flowers, red and blue fruits, orange zest with underlying minerality. Give way to incredible depth on the palate with red cherry, raspberry fruit flavors that linger on for minutes. The power and elegance here are uncanny, and the fruit flavors of wild raspberry, cherry, and forest floor linger for minutes: this is great Pinot Noir and less than half the price of anything close in quality. Steve Hansel and crew should be commended for producing such high-quality juice for the price! Don't miss it!
Antonio Galloni 93+ pts! The 2017 Pinot Noir Cuvée Alyce is showing very well, especially considering its recent bottling. Dense, pliant, and juicy, the Cuvée Alyce has much to offer. A rush of dark raspberry, pomegranate, blood orange, mint and wild flowers builds in a deep, beautifully layered Pinot from Hansel. (Drink between 2021-2032)
