We have another fantastic back vintage of the Cuvee Carnot from Bouchard coming directly from the cellars in Beaune. This time we are featuring the 2018 vintage, which is very approachable right now after its time in the bottle. It is a beautiful effort from a more powerful vintage but so balanced with telltale Volnay Iron minerality and vibrant acids.
Caillerets is considered one of the top vineyards in Volnay, and there is a traditional saying that goes, "he who has no vines in Cailleret does not know what Volnay is worth," which shows how highly regarded this site was and still is to this day. Caillerets has a special place in the lineup of Bouchard because it was the first vineyard they ever bought back in 1775, purchasing 3.76 hectares from the Carnot family, which is still referenced on the bottle. It is one of their most consistent and impressive wines, with centuries of experience cultivating this site.
Bouchard's Caillerets is one of the top premier cru cuvees they make, with a textbook showing of Volnays elegance, spice, and minerality. 2018 is an excellent example of the Cuvee Carnot, and we have low pricing here today that clocks in as one of the best numbers for any vintage of the Cuvee Carnot and no upcharge over the original release price.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93+ points! "The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is showing beautifully from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums, sweet soil tones and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's one of the more tightly wound wines in the range, with powdery structuring tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish."
James Suckling 93 points! "Blueberry, plum and flower aromas with some new leather. It’s full-bodied with lots of fruit and density. Flavorful and stylish at the finish. A little tight now. Try after 2022.
