When we were given a sample of this wine, we did not have high expectations, but after opening the bottle, we were blown away. This is one of the most outstanding wines we have tasted from the village of Givry, and it rivals the best wines made by Domaine Joblot and Francois lump. The wine is seamless, with no rustic characteristics that are sometimes found in this appellation, and the depth of fruit is profound with incredible power that is kept in check by the vibrant acidity of the wine. The palate is long and lingering, with lots of nuanced and dry extract on the finish making for a lovely Reb Burgundy experience. This old address was founded in 1130 by the Cistercian Monks of la Ferté Abbey and was purchased by the Pascal family in 2004. Phillipe Pascal has done a fantastic job bringing Givry and the Cote Chalonaise into a new light and was the first to become certified organic in Givry. With Guillaume Marko making the wines after working for DRC and Arnoux-Lachaux, it is an address that is doing everything the right way and making some of the finest examples to ever come out of Givry. This was such a surprise, and William Kelley says this is the finest vintage yet for Domaine du Cellier aux Moines, making it the perfect time to get acquainted with this address. We have great pricing here and highly recommend this for Red Burgundy fans. Wow!
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 92+ points! "Richer and more muscular than the elegant, charming 2017, the 2018 Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cellier Aux Moines unwinds in the glass to reveal notes of sweet berries, licorice, peonies, spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, with powdery tannins and a concentrated core of fruit, it's the fruit of low yields after the Clos du Cellier Aux Moines was impacted by hail."
Decanter 92 points! "Unsurprisingly, given the warmth of the vintage, the 2018 leads with a pristine and dark cherry-like power than overshadows the mineral aspect hiding underneath. Though lacking the tensile nature of the 2017, it displays uplifting acidity, especially in the finish, that offsets the ripeness. Appropriately reticent given its youthfulness, it blossoms with air. The cashmere-like texture and harmony at this stage suggests it will develop well. It’s scheduled for release in the Autumn of 2021."
Wine Enthusiast (Roger Voss) 92 points! "This wine comes from the walled home vineyard of this domaine. With its intense perfumes and dense texture, it is concentrated, structured and ready for aging. Dark plums and fresh acidity add more dimensions and complexity."
