This is always been a great wine and value that we have been following for years. 2018 is a spectacular all-time best effort from Lionel Faury. Faury's St. Joseph VV has always been the best buys from the commune, seeing the oldest vines of the Domaine with a portion dating back to the 1930s. Great old vine concentration with seamless complexity and depth. This is the sweet spot for Faury and almost as good as his Cote-Rotie but for considerably less. 2018 was a warm vintage in the Northern Rhone, and Faury adapted and found an excellent balance between ripeness and acidity. A bottle not to miss from Faury and typically our favorite St. Joseph's, right behind Gonon.
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 94 pts! Deep, shimmering violet. Heady aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, incense, violet and black pepper show excellent clarity and minerally lift. Sappy, sweet and energetic in style, showing real intensity and sharp delineation to the spice-laced blackberry, cherry liqueur, floral pastille and bitter chocolate flavors. Smooth and seamless in texture, showing impressive clarity and spicy thrust on the gently tannic finish, which echoes the cherry and floral notes. This wine, which is sourced from an old (mostly 1937), Serine-planted vineyard in Chavanay, always over-delivers for its appellation. Made with 60% whole clusters. (Drink between 2023-2031)
