2018 Domaine Georges Glantenay Volnay Vieilles Vignes

$39.99
2018 Domaine Georges Glantenay Volnay Vieilles Vignes
An Envoyer client favorite Domaine, we have been stunned by some of the wines from this slightly unknown Volnay based producer, yet they are not newcomers founded in 1893 by Pierre Glantenay. Now in its 4th generation of family ownership, the Glantenay wines are making a buzz for a good reason. The wines here lean more towards the traditional side of Burgundy, and being from Volnay, are imbued with beautiful elegance and vibrant acidity. We are back this time with Glantenays old-vine bottling from Volnay Village vines, reaching up to 80 years old. The wine is sourced from multiple parcels, and the vines are tended sustainably in a biodiverse environment where wild herbs, grasses, and flowers grow alongside. Yield limiting practices, including green harvesting and de-budding are used, and these, along with the age of the vines, creates a concentrated and more profound wine. The Volnay VV sees 20% new oak aging and is bottled by gravity unfiltered. The 2018 is fresh with expressive red fruits, violets, and minerals with serious depth on the palate and excellent length. This is a classic red Burgundy that is approachable now but will do well with some cellar time too, and an excellent buy at this level with pricing comparable to some Bourgogne Rouge's.

Wine Enthusiast (Anne Krebiehl MW) 93 points! "This wine immediately conveys a sense of concentration with its nose of insistent, dark cherry paired with subtle tar and toast notes. The palate confirms this and presents concentrated fruit on a sinuous, elegant body with silkily woven tannins. For now the oak still casts a tarry spell but this will subside with a little more bottle age. Lovely freshness prevails."
