This has just arrived and will be one of the last chances of getting this bottle at this pricing. Easily our favorite Cuvee from Louis Michel, the only Domaine in Chablis to bottle a Butteaux VV. The gem of Louis Michels Premier Crus, the vines here are over 60 years old and naturally low yielding giving the VV more concentration and complexity than the regular Butteaux bottling. Always consistent in quality and balance, expressing the Butteaux the vineyard perfectly with that classic richness. The Butteaux VV has a depth beyond its price-point, making one of Chablis's highest price-quality ratios. Seriously excellent juice and is very structured in this vintage, so drink the regular Buteaux while you pop this one in the cellar to give it time to shine.
John Gilman 94 points! "The 2018 old vine bottling of Butteaux is just a whisper riper than the regular cuvée, coming in at thirteen percent octane, but more structured, deeper and asking for a bit of time alone in the cellar to fully blossom. The youthful nose delivers a fine constellation of green apple, pear, flinty soil tones, smoke and dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a very good structural chassis, impressive backend minerality and a very long, pure and nascently complex finish. This will be simply ordutstanding in the fullness of time, but will need some bottle age to really blossom. "
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93 points! "The 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes has turned out very well, offering up aromas of green apple, pear and peach mingled with hints of smoke, dried white flowers and paraffin wax. Medium to full-bodied, textural and layered, it's one of the deeper, more concentrated premiers crus in the cellar this year. As usual, it numbers among the highlights of the Louis Michel portfolio."
Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 92-94 points! "The 2018 Chablis Butteaux Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru emerges from a parcel of 65-year-old vines on compact white clay. A wine of power and gravitas, the Vieilles Vignes possesses off-the-charts textural intensity and pure power. Apricot, candied orange peel, spice and honey add to the wine's decidedly exotic feel. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle any time soon. The 2018 is a special wine in the making."
