We have a back vintage of this from d'Angerville, which, as many know, is one of the best estates in Volnay. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, established in the early 19th century, has long been renowned for its dedication to traditional winemaking, emphasizing minimal intervention to make very terroir-focused wines. While wines like the Clos des Ducs get all the love, there are other wines like the Fremiets, which we have here today, that are great values from the d'Angerville cellar. D'Agnerville owns 1.57 hectares of Fremiets, which lie just beneath Clos des Ducs. It features weathered red clay soils and some vines dating back to the 70s. The 2018 vintage in Burgundy saw a warm growing season, resulting in ripe, concentrated fruit and well-structured wines. This particular vintage showcases the elegance and depth characteristic of the estate, reflecting both the quality of the vineyard and the absolute skill of the winemaking here for a long-lived and surprisingly classic example of this vintage. It's a fantastic vintage of Fremiets and an excellent buy for d'Angerville at this special low pricing.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 91-93 points! "The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone aromas, touches of rose petal emerging with aeration. The palate is framed by fine-grained tannin, quite citric on the entry and one of the most Pommard-like of d’Angerville’s Volnays. This is an energetic, edgy Volnay thanks to the limestone soil here. I suspect it will age extremely well. (Drink between 2022-2045)"
Burghound 91-93 points! "An overtly ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose combines notes of liqueur-like black berry fruit with those of exuberantly spicy plum and floral scents. The super-sleek, intense and elegant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the lacy and refreshing finale that is both sappy and impressively long. This is ripe yet it remains very Volnay in character. (Drink starting 2030)"
Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 91-93 points! "Glowing mid purple. First to be picked. Much shallower soil than Les Angles but the vines have reached maturity and have coped in 2018. Darker fruit on the palate with a velvet texture enlivened by the little saline/iodine touch at the back. Very good persistence, finesse here."
