2018 Domaine Saumaize-Michelin Pouilly-Fuisse Vignes Blanches

$39.99
2018 Domaine Saumaize-Michelin Pouilly-Fuisse Vignes Blanches
We have always enjoyed the wines from Saumaize-Michelin, one of our favorite producers in the Maconnais. They make great wines that can be richer in profile but are typically very balanced and downright delicious. We received a sample of the Vignes Blanches earlier last week and got around to tasting it this past weekend. Vignes Blanches is an older plot, with 60+-year-old vines that has always been planted to Chardonnay, unlike many areas of the Maconnais. It is an impressive bottle and a well-done representation of 2018. It has a gorgeous nose with yellow and green citrus that shifts to more orchard fruit as it opens up, complemented by minerality and lovely white flowers as noted by both William and Allen below. This shows some of the vintage's opulence and has nice richness on the palate with the acidity to keep it in check. The Vignes Blanches is showing very well now and is a great bottle that could be enjoyed by both a new and old world Chardonnay lover.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 91 points! "Aromas of pear, citrus oil, white flowers and blanched almonds introduce the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Vignes Blanches, a medium to full-bodied, satiny but incisive wine that's one of the more tightly wound, structured bottlings in the range this year. This has turned out nicely and should reward some bottle age."

Allen Meadows 89-92 points! "A cool, pretty and equally airy nose offers up notes of green apple, acacia blossom and a plenitude of citrus influences. There is fine density and evident minerality suffusing the delicious and well-detailed flavors that culminate in a very dry finish that hints of bitter lemon and warmth appear."
