Berncasteler Bastube is one of the six great vineyard sites in Berncastel and is named after the recreational hot springs that once surrounded the area. This vineyards lies right next to the famed Doctor vineyard and features a fine slate that retains a lot of water which is excellent in warm vintages like 2018. the wines from this site are racy with stable acidity and good aging potential, while at the same time more froward and approachable and noted by John Gilman below as richer than usual to no adverse effect. It is a beautiful complex and classic Riesling that is ready to drink now but could spend a little time in the cellar if desired.
John Gilman 91 points! "The 2018 Badstube Kabinett from Dr. Thanisch Erben Thanisch is another wine that is a touch richer than normal for its Prädikat level, due to the ripeness of the vintage, but has plenty of depth, complexity and purity of fruit and is a very attractive wine in its style. This was still in cask (as was the case with everything else that followed in the tasting lineup) and probably comes in around 8.5 percent octane this year. The bouquet is excellent, wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, a hint of yellow plum, salty slate soil tones, spring flowers and an esthery topnote of bee pollen. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and on the cusp of Spätlese must weight, but lovely detail and balance, with very good focus, bouncy acids and a long, complex and juicy finish. Not a classic example of Kabinett, but truly a delicious bottle of wine that I would be happy to drink anytime!"
Vinous (David Schildknecht) 91 points! "Prickly yeasty and faintly cheesy notes on the nose are a holdover from fermentation and sulfuring that should dissipate soon. Behind that come apple and kiwi with a whiff of wet stone. The silken-textured palate is succulently fruity, leading to a generously juicy, subtly stone-kissed finish where the wine’s sweetness backs off nicely. This is infectious as well as impeccably balanced stuff. (Sadly, for some reason, Thanisch did not serve me either her feinherb version of Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett or her Badstube Spätlese."
