After moving through several cases of the Dutton Estate Chardonnay last week, we figured an offer on the 2018 Pinot Noir would be fitting. We like the 2018 vintage for the Russian River Valley, and the wines are classically structured. Dutton Ranch farms more than 80 separate vineyards in the Russian River Valley, which are all certified Sonoma County sustainably farmed and fish-friendly. The 2018 Karmen Isabella comes from three vineyard sites. The small Green Valley Road vineyard contributes richly flavored fruit, The Thomas Road vineyard contributes bright red cherry aromas and flavors. Lastly, the Manzana vineyard provides secondary and tertiary complexities of fresh strawberry and cherry cola aromas with a fruit-forward palate. The wine is sourced from Dijon 115 and 828 clones before fermentation takes place in open-top fermentors with twice-weekly punch downs. The wine is racked into 45% new French oak barrels for 11 months, where malo-lactic occurs, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is a spot-on example of classic Russian River Pinot Noir with aromas of red berries, strawberries, cola berry, earth, minerals, spice, and a kiss of oak. The wine's velvety texture gives way to notes of black cherry, blackberry, rose, and persimmon on the palate with a lush well-integrated finish. Drinkable now, this is as good as Russian River Pinot Noir gets for the money and would be great for party wine for this upcoming holiday season!
Wine Advocate (Erin Brooks) 91 points! "The 2018 Pinot Noir Karmen Isabella opens with touches of tar and scorched earth that give way to blackberries, laurel, citrus peel and earth. The palate is medium-bodied with concentrated, earth-laced fruits, grainy and very juicy and finishing spicy and lifted. 942 cases produced. Drink: 2020-2024. (Sep 2020)"
