Francois Carillon harnessed the 2018 vintage that plays perfectly into his style of richer and more exotic wines rather than his brothers, more austere style. Francois loves giving the fruit a little extra hang time, but as a descendant of one of Burgundy's greatest winemakers, Francois Virot, who helped put Domaine Leflaive on the map, Francois uses a skillful touch to retain balance in his wines. Champ-Gain is a slower ripening vineyard as well, which develops a lot of exciting flavors, and Francois' piece comes from a 2-hectare plot planted on clay and limetone. This Cuvee always has an excellent backbone of minerality with the ability to age if desired but is still approachable early. We have some excellent pricing on this bottle and which is a great buy for the white burgundy lover or even those that dabble with the high-end domestic Chardonnay.
Allen Meadows 90-93 points! "A cool and airy mix features notes of various white orchard fruit and acacia blossom aromas that are laced with subtle hints of exotic tea and citrus rind. There is a bit more volume to the round and dense medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate on the caressing and solidly long mineral-inflected finish. This needs to develop more depth but it should do that over time.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 90-92 points! "Aromas of candied citrus peal, orange oil, warm pastry and green mango introduce the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping wine that's succulent and fleshy, concluding with a delicately exotic finish."
