2018 Jean-Luc & Eric Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Symphonie

$49.99
2018 Jean-Luc & Eric Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Symphonie
Alain Burguet is one of the few producers in Burgundy that didn't inherit his vines and build the Domaine from the ground up in the 1960s. Today the Domaine covers 9.5 hectares with some excellent holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin and was ahead of the curve, organically cultivating since the Domaine started, whereas most have gone organic more recently. The Domaine is run by Alain's two sons, Jean-Luc and Eric Burguet, who continue the hard work that put the Burguet name on the map. While the Mes Favorites has been the go-to over the years, the Cuvee Symphonie is cut from the same cloth and is sourced from the same (up to) 30 different plots throughout Gevery-Chambertin but comes from younger vines that are 45 years old on average. In contrast, the Mes Favorites is 75 years on average. These younger vines (though not that young) clock in a bit lower pricing and still show the incredibly refined style of Burguet while honing in on some classic Gevrey-Chambertin complexity and depth.
We were able to get a great price on these 2018s, which are showing very well since their release thanks to some extra time in the bottle and can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years. Symphonie is an excellent buy for Gevrey-Chambertin, and 2018 is one of the best vintages ever for this Cuvee, thanks to a bit more power and ripeness from vintage.

Vinous (Neil Martin) 90-92 points! "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Symphonie" (tasted with classical piano tinkling away on the radio as I sat in their office!) has a delightful red cherry and bergamot bouquet that unfolds seductively in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious on the finish, which feels caressing. This comes highly recommended."
