I was really happy to have my taste buds back today after having a sinus infection for the last couple of weeks. This was the perfect bottle to perk my senses up and put me in a good mode. This is a classically inspired Sauvignon Blanc that has a small percentage of Gewurztraminer in the blend.
Nuri Nakamura (owner/wine-maker), a Japanese native, uses the term ‘Sensei” to describe his wine which means, elegant, subtle, nuanced, and detailed. For this wine, I need to add two more words to the prior statement, depth, and power. It is not too far of a stretch to see a slight resemblance to the great Pouilly-Fumes from Didier Dagueneau. Nuri models his Sauvignon Blanc after Japanese Dai-Ginjo sake.
The whole cluster of grapes are lightly pressed, and ½ of the Cuvee is fermented in used French oak barrels to add richness. After ten months of aging, the wine is blended but not cold stabilized or fined. The 2018 vintage was about as classic a vintage from California can be with the wines showing some nice restraint and tension.
Aromas of kiwi, quince, grapefruit, lime, lychee nuts, and lemongrass jump from the glass. The addition of the Gewurztraminer increases the aromatic complexity. On the palate there are refreshing notes of citrus, quince with lots of depth and power all kept in check my wonderful integrated acidity. The finish leaves tons of dry extract on the palate that lingers for minutes. This is about as good as new world Sauvignon Blanc gets, and because of some special pricing, we can offer it at this great price! If you have not tried the wines from Nuri Nakamura this wine would be a great place to start!
