We have a very rare Red Burgundy from this small under-the-radar producer, Oliver Jouan. A 6th generation grower from Morey St. Denis, Oliver knew he could do the family vines justice instead of selling the fruit to places like Bouchard and Drouhin. After completing his viticulture studies in Beaune in 1999, Oliver became the first of his family to make wine professionally, using his old family holdings as the basis for his success. Oliver is a one-person show and is hands-on in every aspect of the wine-making process, from the vineyard to the cellar based in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits. Vines are only worked by hand and are tended organically, many of which have some significant age, which is part of the beauty of this Domaine. On top of that, Oliver limits yields, unleashing the pure and concentrated expression from each vineyard site. The amount of work this man puts into making great wine is noteworthy, and with such a small production, the wines are extremely rare here in the USA, with us typically only able to offer a few bottles at a time.
Today, we have one of the top premier crus from Jouan, the Ruchots Vieilles Vignes, which comes from 50-year-old vines below Clos de Tart and Bonnes Mares. A wine that shows excellent power and complexity with incredible presence and purity, and while 2018 is a riper vintage, this is classic, has a nice streak of elegance, and is one of the best examples ever from Jouan. We have the only bottles of this rare wine available in the USA, and it is a fantastic buy for 1er Cu Burgundy from an address to keep an eye on over the coming years.
Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 93 points! "Dense purple but not the black of the Gevrey. A livelier nose offering intense blueberries and bilberries, very good grip, a little blood orange, but a powerful complex wine with an excellent finish. Leave this to age for ten years."
