A young couple that decided to go for it after working in the wine sector for years, Andrea and Beatrice lead the forefront of a new generation of small-production vintners in Italy—located in the heart of Piedmonte in the Langhe, Runchet, as the husband and wife named it, sources most of their wines from Beatices's father's vineyard as well as his cellar. Runchet's best wine comes from the Barbaresco Cru, Meruzzano, where the star of another small production, Orlando Abrigo, sources some of his Barbaresco. The Meurzzano sees a reasonably traditional vinification with a slow maceration on the skins and wild yeasts but with 225-liter French oak barrels instead of the large Slovenian oak casks. The wine is elegant, detailed, and refined with red fruits, rose petals, and minerals; it reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny with the soul of Piedmont. Runchet is the new kid on the block doing great things, and this Barbaresco is one of the best we have tasted in a while. This is an address to watch out for in the future with wines that are nearly impossible to find in the USA, and the 2018 Meurzzano is a knockout.
