Always an excellent stop in the Russian River Valley, we love Walter Hansel for its outstanding price-quality. Walter Hansel makes some of our favorite domestic Chardonnay, and the Cahill lane is an excellent example of the commitment to quality. Cahill Lane is a road that Walter built through his original property, with his son's building homes along the route. It is entirely planted to the Wente clone and sees large and tiny berries jam-packed in each cluster. It's one of the last blocks to be harvested and has lovely richness because of the hang time. The 2018s that we have tasted have been exceptional and some of the best we have ever tasted from here. The Cahill Lane in as an exceptional value and the sweet spot for price-quality, coming in a step above the Estate chardonnay while slightly less expensive than the Cuvee Alyce. It is always a great house pour with some restraint that appeals to both the new world and old world drinker and is a great bottle to have stocked at home for a casual evening.
Antonio Galloni 93 points! "The 2018 Chardonnay Cahill Lane Vineyard offers a compelling interplay of richness and energy. Lemon confit, almond, dried flowers, sage and chamomile are all laced together in this very pretty, understated Chardonnay from Hansel. The natural richness and texture of Wente Clone Chardonnay emerges nicely over time."
Wine Advocate (Erin Brooks) 94 points! "The 2018 Chardonnay Cahill Lane has very pretty scents of quince and baked apples with notes of crushed hazelnuts, beeswax and white blossoms. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and packed to the gills with concentrated, layered flavors, and it finishes long with bright freshness calling you in for another sip. 907 cases produced."
