2019 Accornero Barbera del Monferrato Giulin
The wines from Accornero are nothing short of spectacular, clocking in as one of the best addresses for Italian values. A few of our clients may be familiar with the 2016 Grignolino we offered a while back and but we have to say that this is an even better showing of this Piedmont-based producer's capability. Founded by Giulio Accornero in 1957 in the Vignale Monferrato Commune of Piedmont, located about an hour northeast of Barolo above the City of Asti. His two sons Ermanno and Massimo run the estate today with their father's unyielding desire for quality, respecting the past tradition and the land.
The vines for the Giulin were planted in 1980, 1990, 2000 and are 100% Barbera seeing leaf thinning and green harvesting to control yields and improve the quality of the grapes. Grapes are hand-harvested with fermentation in a tank with a submerged cap seeing pump-overs regularly. After fermentation, the wine is aged in stainless steel and 500-liter French oak Tonneaux.
The results are an incredible display of complex, brilliant fruit and delicious savory notes with a surprisingly serious amount of structure and balance. As Galloni mentions below, it is a Knock out this vintage and easily the best buy for Piedmont in 2019. This can be enjoyed now or even tucked away for a while. We have the only bottles of this new vintage in the USA right now, and as far as values go, this is not a bottle to pass up.
