Crozes-Hermitage's Alain Graillot has been leading the charge for decades. With the support of his son Maxime, they together fashion some of the most beautiful and classic Syrah from the Northern Rhone. All the wines are sourced from organically farmed vines closing in on 40 years old, vinified whole cluster, and aged in older Burgundy barrels. Alain's son Maxime heads this Domaine, and we had the pleasure to meet him a few years back, a brilliant and friendly man that seemed to know each barrel in his cellar like the back of his hand. Graillot makes one of the best examples of Crozes-Hermitage around, and the 2019 here is fantastic and follows the path of many of the vintage's top wines. While it was seen as a dry and warmer vintage, a bizarre hailstorm came through Crozes-Hermitage, causing Graillot's yields to be down significantly, according to Joe Czerwinski when he tasted at the Domaine in early 2020. We have the only bottles available in the USA right now, along with a few rare magnums which are available here, don't miss it!
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 91-93 points! " Spice-driven dark berry, cherry, peony and licorice aromas are sharpened by a zesty mineral flourish. Fleshy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky nuance on the back half. Shows fine definition and energy and finishes spicy and quite long, displaying gently chewy tannins and a resonating floral quality."
