While these wines are slowly being discovered in Europe in places like England with a big Chablis following, Besson is relatively unknown. It's been a few years since we have offered any of the wines from this Domaine, but with the recent attention, and the two very motivated Besson children taking over the estate, the wines are as good as they have ever been. Founded by Eugene Besson in 1902, a cooper by trade who started the vineyards to make wine for his family, inspired his son Felix to purchase more land totaling nearly 8 hectares, and Besson began. Alain Besson, Grandson of Eugene, would be the most influential person in the history of the Domaine, expanding to 21 hectares and leaving the city center to build a new winery setting the course for success. Today, Alain's children run the show, both of whom have been passionate about winemaking and farming since a young age, graduated with enology degrees as soon they could. Vineyard work is done sustainably, adopting the Lutte Raisonnee ideology that many follow in Burgundy and plowing, leaf thinning, and manual harvesting. Fruit is harvested and pressed slowly with low pressure to preserve the aromatics and freshness before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel. 8% is vinified in oak, which brings more complexity and roundness to the wine with aging on the lees for 18 months before bottling. This is textbook Chablis that precise, mineral-driven, and pure stacking up as one of the best deals we have ever had for this excellent premier cru vineyard and hands down the best deal for classic premier cru Chablis in 2019 with the discount. A warm, appealing and inviting example, with mineral/flinty characters to balance the sunny fruit ripeness. A nicely chiselled example with more drive and verve than some other Montmains tasted.
