These are our last bottles of this incredible Cabernet Franc value from Chinon. This is a fantastic wine at this price point, competing with some of the heavy hitters of the appellation at very affordable pricing. The wines from Chateau de la Bonnliere have yet to catch the eye of the masses and are pretty rare in the USA with very limited importation, which has kept prices very low. It is an incredible value from an address to keep an eye on, and we have a limited amount available at this low price.
The wines of Chinon can be excellent, and we love addresses like Baudry, but we are featuring a new producer today who is edging out the best of the region regarding price-quality. This is a historic wine that comes from a plot planted around the famed Château de la Bonnelière, nestled in the heart of Chinon in the Loire, which the Plouzeau family (current owners) purchased in 1846, though the Chateau's origins date back to the 15th century. The estate currently boasts 35 hectares of vineyards, primarily dedicated to the cultivation of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. Their commitment to sustainable practices is underscored by its Terra Vitis certification, reflecting a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity in winemaking.
Marc Plouzeau makes the wines, and the fruit for this cuvee comes exclusively from the vines surrounding Château de la Bonnelière called Clos de la Bonnelière. This beautiful clay-limestone terroir gives the wine a delightful elegance and fresh, delicate aromatics. The wine is matured for 12 months in demi-muids in their cellars beneath the fortress of Chinon.
This is a fantastic Chinon that is on par with Baudry and the other favorites and is such a value at this pricing. With a few years already in the bottle, this is fantastic and is a wine that will continue to age for years to come. Truly a sensational Chinon at pricing so rarely seen for great wines these days, we have low pricing on some of the only bottles available in the USA.
John Gilman 94+ points! "The 2019 Chinon “les Cornuelles” from Marc Plouzeau is an outstanding young wine. The vines are just about sixty years of age now and Monsieur Plouzeau ages the wine is older four hundred and fifty liter barrels. The 2019 les Cornuelles offers up a deep and sappy bouquet of sweet dark berries, cassis, a touch of menthol, cigar wrapper, a complex base of dark soil tones, plenty of smokiness and a dollop of tree bark in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with lovely sappiness and elegance, a fine undertow of soil tones, ripe, firm tannins and outstanding length and grip on the poised and impeccably balanced finish. This is still a young wine by any stretch of the imagination and will demand cellaring time to properly soften up on the backend, but it is going to be an absolutely stunning bottle of Chinon once it is ready to drink!"
