Berthaut-Gerbet is a small domaine located in Fixin that we have offered a few wines from in the past. With only a few hectares of vines, Domaine Bertheau-Gerbet slowly increased its size through the generations, with each family member doing their part to perpetuate this old address. Starting with sharecropping and whole selling juice until Guy Berthaut assumed control in the 1930s, intending to build a brand and bottle his wines after WWII. Berthaut expanded to parts of Gevrey-Chambertin and, in the 1960s, began exporting their wines to places like the UK and USA. Years later, in 1974, Vincent and Dennis Barthaut took the lead, expanding the Domaine holdings further with more premier cru and village vines and constructing a new cellar in Fixin in 2005. Denis married Marie-Andree Gerbet of Domaine Francois Gerbet and had a daughter, Amelie, who works with her father Denis, managing the now 18 hectares of vines. Vineyard management is done organic and sustainably without using chemicals, and in the cellar, a traditional hands-off approach with minimal new oak is applied.
The Haut Cote de Nuits has become more popular over the past few years. Because of constantly rising temperatures, areas like the Haut-Cote are getting a bit riper than ten years ago, making for some impressive Bourgognes. This Haut-Cote de Nuits features some old vines planted in 1970, 1972, 1976, and 1980 with two newer plantings in 2017 and 2018. Fruit is hand-harvested and destemmed before fermentation which occurs in cold concrete vats seeing some pump-overs and punch-downs towards the end of fermentation before aging in older oak barrels for ten months. The 2019 Hautes-Cotes de Nuits is a beautiful bottle with fresh red fruits, showing a good sense of place with nice minerality and overall outstanding balance. It is one of the top examples of the Hautes-Cotes this vintage and an excellent buy for the category with a CellarTracker community score of 90.4. We have friendly pricing on some of the only bottles available in the USA, and it is a bottle that shows how great the Hautes-Cotes is getting.
Tasting note by Burghound "A beautifully fresh nose is comprised by notes of ripe yet cool red berries that are trimmed in enough earth to notice. The delicious and well-detailed middle weight flavors possess very good verve and a subtle salinity before concluding in a seductively textured, balanced and lingering finale. This isn't super-complex but at this level, this is more than just good."A Beautiful
