We have just over two cases of this excellent Red Burgundy buy available. Our favorite producer in Pernand, Chandon de Briailles, is an address we have tasted many times and enjoyed many older selections from the Domaine. The 2019 is a fantastic example of this wine and part of the top vintages of all time for the Ille de Vergelesses. We still have low pricing here, coming highly recommended.
One of the most remarkable addresses of Pernand-Vergelesses Domaine Chandon de Briailles, is a magnificent address for beautiful, classic Burgundy. We have been long-time admirers of the Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolay, owner/winemaker of Chandon de Briaiiles, meeting here on a few occasions at her incredible Domaine, where she opened up some older, fabulous wines. Considered one of the top wines of the Domaine, the Ile de Vergelesses is an exceptional Red Burgundy, with 2019 being one of the best vintages ever for this Cuvee. Sourced from vines over 40 years old, they are found mid-slope on a slight incline facing east with clay and limestone soils in medium deep ground, making this an exceptional terroir. Their classic style, use of whole cluster fermentation, and regime of older wood were another perfect match for the vintage, and the resulting wine is exceptional. We have a few cases at this low pricing, and it's a top buy for 2019 Premier Cru Red Burgundy.
John Gilman 93 pts! "About a third of the domaine’s fine holdings in Île de Vergelesses are very old vines, and these were picked ahead of the Sirocco weekend, with the younger vines being gathered at the same time as the les Lavières a few days later, when that hot south wind was blowing. The wine has turned out beautifully, with the old vine portion of the blend adding a sense of vibrancy that really augurs well for its long-term evolution. The nose wafts from the glass in a youthful mix of cherries, woodsmoke, pigeon, coffee, a complex base of soil tones, just a touch of new oak and a beautiful topnote of sweet stem tones from the whole clusters. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely structured out of the blocks, with an excellent core of fruit, fine soil undertow, ripe, buried tannins and lovely balance and grip on the long and complex finish. This is an excellent wine in the making! (Drink between 2029 - 2065)"
Decanter (Charles Curtice MW) 93 points! "From a parcel of more than 3ha in this premier cru, perfectly exposed to the southeast. The best of the red is fermented with about two-thirds whole clusters, before ageing in older casks to produce this wine that is initially somewhat backwards, but opens with time to show a pleasant blackberry fruit and mineral notes. The texture is fresh and tightly wound, with grippy tannins leading to a very rewarding finish."
Burghound 91-93 pts! "An even more floral-suffused nose offers another step up in elegance with its attractively spiced aromas of rose petal, violet, sandalwood and cool red cherry. The sleek, intense and sophisticated medium weight flavors brim with minerality and dry extract on the balanced, persistent and complex finale. This mildly austere effort will need most of a decade to arrive at its peak - well worth seeking out. (Drink starting 2029)"
