Many are familiar with the vineyard "Les Poyeux" and the producer that brought it to popularity, Clos Rougeard, whose wines come with a hefty price tag. Still, there are a few other producers that make great wines from this vineyard. One of them is Domaine de Sanzay, which is not to be confused with Antoine Sanzay. The wines here are an incredible value that goes beyond what one would expect from such a small price tag, and to be able to get a bottle of Les Poyeux, one of the best vineyards for Cabernet Franc in the world at this price, is unbelievable. Domaine de Sanzay was founded in 1880 and has grown to spread over 28 hectares of vineyards throughout Varrians and its neighboring villages. Of that 28 hectares, only 1.5 comes from the Les Poyeux vineyard, the Domaines smallest holding by far and has been cultivated sustainably for over 12 years, becoming certified organic in 2016. The vines here are over 40 years old planted on sandy limestone soil, which is the key to this vineyard's success, retaining heat and helping the maturation of the grapes, and imparting a beautiful minerality. This is fermented with wild yeasts in temperature-controlled vats before aging in concrete vats and bottling in the summer. The Poyeux is deep with black fruits, spice, and underbrush, while the palate is fresh and opulent with silky tannins. A wine that has a structure for aging but is very approachable in its youth. Les Poyeux is a fantastic wine and an absolute no-brainer, and for fans of Antoine Sanzay, Clos Rougeard, or Cabernet Franc from the Loire, this is the wine to buy.
