2019 Domaine du Comte Christophe de Courten Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve du Cygne

$49.99
2019 Domaine du Comte Christophe de Courten Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve du Cygne
A very special and rare wine from Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Comte Christophge de Courten is a small producer with 7 hectares of vines owned by Christophe de Courten. Christophe is committed to his small production, where he takes every detail very seriously, doing much of the work himself by hand, and is wholly committed to organic agriculture with his century-old vines, which he has been practicing since the Domaine's inception. The wines see a traditional fermentation after extensive sorting using concrete vats with aging done in oak barrels. The blend here is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, with 60% sourced from the terroirs of Galets roulés (classic vineyards with large red rocks) and 40% from Sol Brune (those with brown ground) but can sometimes see vines grown on sandier soil depending on the vintage. The Reserve de Cygne is incredibly rare, and Christophe only produces 2,500 bottles a year of this Cuvee, which is 1 of 4 wines he makes. It's a beautiful and serious expression of CDP with deep red fruits, spice, and a floral aspect. Powerful yet fresh and lively, while this is a generous wine, it's impeccably balanced and shows good finesse throughout.
This is a hard-to-find wine that is rarely imported yet is one of the best buys for Chateauneuf du Pape with quality that rivals some of the best of the vintage, yet it is half the price of wines from producers like Pegau, Clos des Papes, and Beaucastel. We have the only bottles available in the USA right now, and it's a wine not to miss this vintage.

Wine Advocate ( Joe Czerwinski ) 96 pts! "A 60-40 blend of Grenache and Syrah, with the Grenache matured in demi-muid and the Syrah in barrel, Cristophe de Courten's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve du Cygne will be tough to find, with just 2,500 bottles produced. It's a bit cedary but otherwise built along similar lines to this estate's other special cuvée: gorgeously full-bodied, silky, plush and complex, with hints of vanilla, black cherries, raspberries, a gentle whiff of garrigue and a long, elegant finish."
