We just tasted this, and it is a very impressive bottle of red Burgundy and our best new find of the vintage. Showing lovely aromas of blue and red fruits, soil tones, baking spices, and underbrush give way on the palate to the incredible depth of fruit, power, lots of dry extracts, and ample acidity with a peacock tail of a finish that lingers for minutes. This wowed us at this pricing and is really worth checking out!
This is the first time we have offered the wines from Domaine Huber-Verdereau, a domaine founded in the late 1920s. This address wouldn't fully evolve to what it is today until the 90s when Thiébault Huber took over his family estate. Originally this domaine only had three hectares, which they rented out. After a brief Sommillier stint in Cannes, Thiebault would go to study at the lycée Viticole in Beaune before interning at his cousins Jean-Marc Bouley's Domaine in Volnay for a year prior to his first vintage. In 1994 with 3 hectares, Thiebault completed his first vintage and little by litter has expanded now working with 10 hectares, spread over seven villages, 32 plots of land, and above all, 22 different appellations. Theibault is also a dedicated follower of Biodynamics and follows every aspect of the doctrine, from harvesting and bottling using the lunar calendar and emulsions made with different organic compounds, which in essence, give the wines the protection and extra nutrients in the soils. Many aren't willing to travel fully down this path due to the extra work required by Thiebault, who has proven that he is one of the unsung heroes of Burgundian winemaking, flying under the radar for far too long.
The Clos de Chenes is a fantastic wine from this Domaine and the top wine that Thiebault makes. Sourced from 70-year-old vines, this is an incredible example of this great Volnay premier cru, hand harvested and with double sorting; the grapes are 100% destemmed and vinified in cement tanks before aging in oak for 12 to 14 months with no racking. 2019 is a massively impressive effort and easily the best example of this wine yet. While this is not on the level of someone like Michel Lafarge, it is very close at a fraction of the price and a downright excellent example of this vineyard. Currently, it is sporting a massive CellarTracker Community score of 96. This has classic structure for aging and is one of the top premier cru buys of the vintage. Because this is a relatively unknown address, the pricing is very affordable, and we have some of the only bottles available in the USA.
Burghound 92 points! "A discreet but perceptible application of wood sets off the exceptionally spicy nose of dark raspberry along with a plethora of floral elements. There is excellent richness to the palate coating larger-scaled flavors that possess plenty of punch and evident power and minerality on the firmly structured and ever-so-mildly warm finale. This needs to depth but it is very promising. (Drink starting 2031)"
