Tasting here a few years back was one of the greatest takeaways of our trip to France, and we just tasted the 2019 Bourgogne Blanc which is one of the best efforts of all time. The wines here are made by Phillippe Pernot, grandson of the famous Puligny-Montrachet winemaker, Paul Pernot. Phillippe's wines are not far off and impressive at a slightly lower price. Learning to make wines from his grandfather, helping run the estate through the 2000s, and marrying one of the Belicards in 2009, he acquired 6 hectares of vineyards that the Belicards historically had sold off with buying contracts. Phillippe canceled the contracts to make his own Domaine wines and has been doing great work with his 6 hectares, using sustainable and organic practices for healthy fruit, making very classic wines that expose the minerality and structure of the Puligny terroir. They are excellent examples of Puligny that do the family name justice. Phillippe has yet to inherit his Pernot family vines, so it will be like winning the lottery for Phillippe and his family when that day comes.
The Bourgogne blanc here is exceptional and comes from 25 to 65-year-old vines, the younger vines coming from Puligny-Montrachet proper, and the older ones from some surrounding vineyards on the outskirts of the village, all of which are mostly grown on chalky clay soils. Always hand-harvested, Philippe uses a combination of stainless steel tanks and barrels (20-25% new) with wild yeast fermentation and a long and cold malolactic fermentation over the winter months. The wine then ages in oak for 12 months and 6 more in stainless steel.
2019 is exceptional and is a gorgeous bottle of white Burgundy with a Puligny-Montrachet flair. Lots of minerality accented by yellow fruits that are rich yet vibrant with nice acidity and length. 2019 is the best version to date of this wine, and we have low pricing on some of the only bottles available in the country, which are due to arrive next week.
