One of our favorite Bourgogne Rouge wines of the vintage, this is a fantastic example of the Bons Batons vineyard from this excellent red Burgundy vintage. Bon Batons is one of the most famous Bourgogne-level Lieu Dits and was made famous by Barthod. It is an exciting Bourgogne Rouge with excellent complexity, depth, and a beautiful core of fruit, making it a pure joy to drink. As Neil Martin states below, it's one of the best Bourgogne Rouge's this vintage, and we must agree.
Many may be familiar with Barthods Bon Batons bottling, but Domaine Rion makes an equally enjoyable and just as rare version himself. From a .06 hectare vineyard averaging 40 years old located between Gilly-les-Citeaux and Chambolle-Musigny with limestone-rich clay soils, this is an excellent Bourgogne Rouge that is consistently one of the top contenders of any vintage. Rion's Bon Batons can touch village-level quality and is an impressive display of how good Bourgogne rouge can be. This is a rare find and available for a bit less than Barthod's version, but it looks like this is the favorite in 2019. It is highly recommended by Meadows and Martin below, with Martin calling it one of the best Bourgogne Rouges of the vintage. This is a very limited and rare wine, and currently, we have the only bottles available in the USA.
Tasting Note By Allen Meadows "This is riper still with its layered aromas of very fresh poached plum, dark cherry, spice, violet and warm earth. There is a bit more volume to the appealingly textured and rich medium-bodied flavors that retain very good delineation on the youthfully austere finish that offers a smidgeon better depth and length. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth your interest."
Tasting Note By Neil Martin "The 2019 Bourgogne Rouge "Bon Baton" has a pure dark cherry and wild strawberry bouquet that becomes more floral in the glass. The fresh, lively palate is medium-bodied with dark berry fruit, fine acidity and good tension on the finish. One of the best Bourgogne Rouge this vintage."
