We have a limited amount of the 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin, the top wine from Taupenot-Merme, after selling out from our previous offer of the '20s and '16s. Currently run by 9th generation winemaker Romain Taupenot whose family has winemaking roots dating back to the 17th century, Romain is a savvy winemaker that grew up working alongside his father and grandfather, picking up the tools of the trade at a very young age. The Domaine has 9 hectares of some outstanding holdings spread throughout the Cote d'Or. Many of their sites have serious age, contributing to the quality of the wines, 1959 in the case of the Mazoyeres. This is an outstanding wine that is technically part of Charmes-Chambertin but allowed to be labeled as Mazoyères-Chambertin and located just below the prestigious Le Chambertin Vineyard. Romain applies most of his efforts to vine growing and, like many great winemakers, believes that good wine is made in the vineyard first, preferring a hands-off and minimal intervention approach in the cellar. Every wine in the range expresses the vineyard character unique to each site undergoing a destemmed cold soak with indigenous yeasts to start fermentation, a technique coined by the great Henri Jayer. The 2019 rendition of this wine is nothing short of exceptional and is one of this Cuvee's top vintages to date. We have friendly pricing here on some of the only bottles available in the USA.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 95-97 points! "The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme."
