We have just a few cases of this excellent selection from Riber del Duero, Flor de Pingus. Our Ribero del Duero offers are few and far between, but this is one we couldn't pass up and is the new release of Domino Pingus' second label. Domino Pingus makes one of the most collectible wines in Ribero del Duero and all of Spain, which is on par with Grand Cru Burgundy or First Growth Bordeaux pricing, reaching upwards and over $1,000 a bottle. Founded in 1995 by a Danish Oenology Peter Sisseck, who had been working in the region for several years already, the beauty of this Domaine has been the very old vine holdings within the La Horra area of Ribero del Duero. It was always part of Peter's vision to have two wines, and it took Flor de Pingus many years longer to achieve the expression he was seeking. Searching out older vineyards, converting them to biodynamic, and replanting some vines with massale selection, it was a process, but Flor de Pingus follows the same philosophy that its older sibling does, focusing on older vines and, in our opinion, is a much better buy at 10% of the pricing of the Pingus bottling. Flor de Pingus sees 40% whole clusters and native yeast fermentation with racking in used barrels to promote its terroir expression. 2019 will be another excellent vintage for this wine as one of the top buys in Spain, mirroring the quality of the crown jewel, Pingus, but at much friendlier pricing.
James Suckling 97 pts! Blackberries, black cherries and hot crushed stones with cement and black licorice. Subtle yet complex aromas. Medium to full body and an exquisite texture, with intense tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The verve and mouth-feel is luxurious and captivating. This is very structured. Try after 2024.
