2019 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino

$69.99
2019 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino
A beautiful estate located in the South-East of Montalcino in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Poggio di Sotto is one of the leading figures, and today we have an exceptional new release. Founded in 1989, the vineyards of this estate are located from 600 to 1,300 feet above sea level, extending over an area of 48 hectares, 20 of which are planted with organically tended vines on steep, south-facing slopes that have an average gradient of 10%. The rest of the property is a combination of olive groves and forest. The vines are protected by the Monte Amiata or ancient lava domes, and the closeness to the river Orcia provided Poggio di Sotto with a unique environment.
We have a bit of the Rosso that has just been released, and it is a contender for the best Rosso di Montalcino this vintage. This is annually one of the best Rosso examples and blows many of the Brunello Proper wines out of the water. 2019 is easily the best example of Rosso from Poggio di Sotto to date and is sourced from multiple vineyards with different exposures on the property, mainly seeing the younger vines of the estate. While it is not a cheap date for Rosso, it is clearly one of the best of the vintage and on par with the Brunello level. Two huge notes below, these are currently the only bottles available in the USA.

Vinous (Eric Guido) 95 pts! "Shavings of cedar, blood orange, crushed cherries, dried flowers and stone dust form a mesmerizing bouquet as the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino slowly opens in the glass. There are depths of ripe textural fruits here, offset by zesty spices and bright acidity that sweeten the expression while energizing it as well. A web of fine tannins coats the palate through the finish, coupled with a core of primary concentration and sweet inner florals that seem to never truly fade. What a glorious achievement from Poggio di Sotto. The 2019 spent a whopping 43 days macerating on the skins, followed by 29 months of refinement in cask. It’s undoubtedly a baby Brunello. (Drink between 2025 - 2031)"

Decanter 94 pts! "Poggio di Sotto is well known for its Rosso as well as for its Brunello. One of the most expensive and celebrated Rosso labels in Montalcino, it's also one of the few with real ability to age. Peach skin vibrancy, restrained floral character, medlar and cardamom dominate the nose. The attack is velvety and thick, showing potential due to great mid-palate extraction and concentration of fruit. The acidity is long and integrated, keeping the wine in great balance. A stony, mineral finish is its crowning glory. (Drink between 2022 - 2029)"
