Fontodi is one of the great wine producers in Tuscany today, located in the town of Panzano in a valley called 'Conca d'Oro' or the golden shell due to its fertile soil, sun exposure, and amphitheater shape. The Fontodi family has been making wine since 1968 but has been in Chianti for centuries, formerly known for their production of Terracotta. The Estate owns 130 hectares tended to organically, with 70 dedicated to vines.
Flaccianello della Pieve is a selection of the Estate's best Sangiovese vines and spends extended time (24 months) aging in oak (Troncais and Allier barrels). The 2019 is a lovely example of this fantastic Tuscan. While not as much of a grand showing as the 2018, this is still very good, and overall, 2019 is an excellent vintage in Tuscany. As time goes on, these scores might prove conservative, and comparatively, this is available at much lower pricing. This is one of the best prices we have seen for Fotodi in years and is a great buy for this top Tuscan address.
James Suckling 96 pts! "Blackberry, black-cherry, bark and ink aromas follow through to a full body with tight, integrated tannins and a solid core of fruit at the same time. A little hard and tight now. From organically grown grapes. Needs time to open. Try after 2025."
Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 94 pts! "The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another potent wine from Fontodi in this vintage. That said, it has more than enough mid-palate heft and overall intensity to balance its equally imposing tannins. Black cherry, mocha, licorice, lavender, spice and tobacco fill out the layers. The 2019 needs time to integrate its oak and for the imposing tannins to soften. (Drink between 2026 - 2044)"
