A producer from the Loire that we haven't offered in many years, we had the chance to visit Chidaine a few years back and became even more fascinated by the wines. As we mentioned, we skipped the last few vintages, but there is no better time to refamiliarize with this jewel in Montlouis-Sur-Loire making incredible Chenin Blanc than the outstanding 2019 vintage. 2019 for Chidaine ranks among the best of all time with an incredible score from Stephan Reinhardt. Chidaine has 37 hectares of vines split into 50 parcels, of which 20 hectares are dedicated purely to Chenin. Vines here have been organic since the early 90s and then biodynamic before the turn of the century, mainly planted on flinty clay and tuffeau. Les Choisilles has always been a favorite from Chidaine and is a complete knockout in 2019, sourced from 30 to 90-year-old vines which are hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts in 600-liter demi-muids. Malolactic fermentation is blocked here and instead ages on the lees to find richness for about 11 months. This is one of the dry Chenin Blancs here and a long-time favorite, with only a gram or two of sugar per liter left after fermentation. 2019 has fantastic acidity and is very mineral-driven with a stunning balance between richness and freshness. 2019 Les Choisilles is a fantastic Loire wine, and the most excellent version ever from this Domaine, perfect for those that love old-world white wines and is ideal as an aperitif and for main courses.
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 96 points! "Chidaine's 2019 Montlouis sur Loire Les Choisilles is deep, pure, fresh and refined on the nose but still very young, with lemon leaf, chalk and sur lie aromas. On the palate, this is a rich and concentrated Chenin, but it reveals remarkable freshness and energy. It is a bit unfair to compare it to the 2018, which has a year more of development, but I have to, and I am still amused by the 2019, which lifts Les Choisilles to unknown heights. The salinity and mineral grip are really beautiful here in the finish, and I believe the wine can age for two decades. Highly attractive pineapple flavors on the aftertaste. Tasted in March 2021."
