We recently tasted this, and we quickly concluded that this is the best vintage of this wine we have ever tried. 2019 was an extremely short crop in South Africa, and Hamilton Russell lost about 50% of its fruit. While this was a significant blow, there is a silver lining to the cloud, and that is this gorgeous Chardonnay. 2019 is so light on its feet, walking a tight rope between opulent and delicate. The wine is fresh, intense, and concentrated with a very tight minerality and purity of fruit. This is an exquisite example of Chardonnay from SA with astonishing complexity and depth at this price point. There is not much out there that can top this level of quality outside of Burgundy, and if the currency in South Africa were stronger, this could very well be much more. 2019 is going to be a top vintage for Hamilton Russell's Chardonnay displaying a great sense of place and a level of seriousness we have yet to see in this wine; this is not a vintage to miss.
