2019 Jean Javillier Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes

$89.99
2019 Jean Javillier Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes
A rare producer to find in the US, Jean Javillier is an unheard-of address in Burgundy. A small gem of an estate, Javillier has been hiding in plain sight, located between Roulot and Coche Dury. Though the Javillier name is recognized in the region, this part of the family is unaffiliated with anyone else. The Domaine was created in 1933 by Jacques Javillier, a career soldier, before passing it to his son Jean and his wife, Christine. The two would shape the future of the Domaine, converting the vineyards to organic as early as 1972. Their sons Theirry and Alain now continue the tradition of classic Burgundian winemaking with an exceptional range of wines that lean more towards the style of the golden days of Burgundy. In William Kelley's write-up of the Domaine, he states they remind him of the wines of the 40s before bigger winemaking styles came into being. The Clos de Chene here follows that path and is a very elegant example of this excellent Volnay vineyard from some very old vines planted in 1937, part of which were destroyed by an Allied tank in 1945. Producers like Javiller is what keeps us coming back to Burgundy; with so much rich history and exceptional winemaking, it is baffling that they have been flying under the radar for so long. We can't think of a better vintage to get acquainted with Javillier than 2019, where the wines are excellent across the board, but the Clos des Chenes is one of the top buys. We have the only bottles of this wine available in the USA right now, and it is highly recommended for all Red Burgundy lovers.

Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93+ points! "From vines planted in 1937, Javillier's 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is superb, mingling notions of sweet red berries and plums with hints of orange rind, petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's supple and concentrated, with melting tannins and a long, resonant finish. Readers interested in history will be intrigued to learn that, in 1945, a few rows of this parcel were damaged when a Sherman tank positioned itself here to fire on Wehrmacht forces near Beaune."
