One of the now traditional addresses of Volnay, Pousse d'Or, is also one of the oldest Domaines in Burgundy, dating way back to the 4th century. The 2019s from this address are exceptional, and we were able to source some of their much-loved Caillerets at this sharp pricing. An east-facing mid-slope vineyard, this is a textbook premier cru location. The vines here are over 50 years old, planted stony, and rich in marl limestone with a high percentage of clay, which is believed to contribute to this wine's supple mouthfeel. All vineyards are grown biodynamically with Demeter certification. Grapes are always hand harvested and destemmed, seeing an indigenous fermentation, aging in 30% new oak for 18 months with minimal sulfur.
As mentioned, the 2019s are exceptional here, and this is one of the best examples of Caillerets from Pousse d'Or. This shows an excellent combination of dark fruits, wildflowers, and minerality. A few years in the cellar and this will really start to shine and build more complexity. This is one of the best buys for 2019 Volnay Caillerets and is highly recommended for the Burgundy lover.
Burghound 92 points! "A mentholated top note is present on the more deeply pitched nose of poached plum, violet and discreet hints of fennel and cinnamon. There is excellent verve to the utterly delicious flavors that exude a highly attractive inner mouth perfumed before culminating in a chiseled, youthfully austere and bitter cherry pit inflected finale. Lovely. (Drink starting 2031)"
