Starting with a single small vineyard that was gifted to his father from his great-grandpa in 1985, Domaine Niero began with very humble beginnings. Remi took over his small family Domaine about ten years ago and has since made some impressive wines loved by critics like Jeb Dunnuck. Not an address what we work with often; this is the first time we have offered the Condrieu from Niero, but it is a great vintage to get acquainted with this Domaine. The hillside Chery is considered one of the most beautiful terroirs of the appellation, made up of terraced vineyards with granite soils. Niero owns .8 hectares of Viognier here that are around 30 years old. Niero is committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices and was recently certified by HVE in France, similar to AB but certifies the source, not just the product, i.e., the vineyard. Grapes are pressed and fermented in a tank before aging for 12 months in 40% oak and 60% Stainless steel. The barrels see some Batonage—a wine with fantastic richness, explosive minerality, and complex aromatics. An excellent example of Condrieu we have a great price here. Domaine Niero is an address to keep an eye on.
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points! "The 2019 Condrieu Chery is always a more steely, mineral-driven example of this appellation, but it packs a punch in 2019 and has powerful notes of buttered citrus, pineapple, honeysuckle, and a liquid rock-like minerality. These carry to a rich, full-bodied Condrieu with an opulent texture, moderate acidity, and a great finish. As with most 2019 Condrieu (and 2018s), it's not going to be the longest lived, but who cares? Drink this brilliant wine over the coming 4-5 years."
