This is our first offer from this Spanish producer who is doing great things in Rioja Alvasia, located in the mountainous northern province of Alva, the historical area of Basque Country. In the late 80s, after working with the buying and selling of vineyards for 20 years, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza leaped to start his winery. With good knowledge of the area's vineyards, he knew what plots he wanted for his new venture and was one of the first to bring technology to this traditional area with a more advanced winery.
The vineyards are made up of more than eighty hectares of tempranillo, viura, and malvasía spread throughout six plots in the Cantabrian mountain range. Fernando gave careful consideration to the habitat, microclimate, orientation, and the low yield of the vines, with an average age of fifty years choosing what he thought was best. As Tim Atkin mentions below, Remirez de Ganuza is more known for their red wines, but the whites here are also exceptional, with the Reserva Blanco being one at the top of the list and is similar to white Burgundy. Northern Spanish white wines have been some of the top value buys we have tasted recently, and this is another great one.
We currently have low pricing on some of the only bottles available, and for those that have enjoyed our recent selection of Spanish white wines, this is another one to consider.
Tim Atkin, MW 95 points! "(13.5%). Such is the fame of Remírez de Ganuza's red wines that people often overlook the whites, which is a huge shame. Made from small sub-plots of Viura, Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca, this is a mini white Burgundy style cuvée that's fermented and aged in 90% new oak. Subtle, leesy and intense, with aromatic wood spices and a tangy, stony, citrus-edged palate. 2022-29. (2022)"
