One of our favorite addresses in Napa the Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon has been one of the bar-setting wines for us. While the Flagship Cabernet gets all the attention the team at Spotswoode makes an array of finely crafted wines and the Lyndenhurst could be considered the younger sibling to the Cab we all know and love.
Lyndenhurst is a tribute to the prolific lynden trees that surround the Spottswoode estate and features estate fruit blended with other sources Including fruit from St. Helena Darms Lane, Napa Valley Edcora, Atlas Peak Knights Bridge, Knights Valley Parry Vineyard, and St. Helena Young Inglewood. The blend this vintage comes to 77.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.4% Cabernet Franc, 4.1% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot and 3.8% Malbec. The wine is aged for 20 months in 42 percent new oak of which 92% is French and 8% comes from other sources. 2019 is one of the best vintages for the Lyendenhurst of all time and those that buy some of this wine will get priority on the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon when it is released at the beginning of September.
James Suckling 94 points! "This shows lots of chocolate and vanilla on the nose, together with ripe dark fruit and some wet earth. Floral undertones, too. Full-bodied and balanced with a meaty structure and ripe tannin. Yet, it’s easy to drink with a medium, fruity finish. Tight, dry and firm at the end. Modern and poised. Try from 2023."
Wine Advocate (Lisa Perotti-Brown) 93 points! "The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst is composed of 77.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.4% Cabernet Franc, 4.1% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot and 3.8% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple in color, it skips out of the glass with lively blueberries, redcurrants and kirsch scents, plus hints of cedar chest, fragrant earth and rose hip tea. Medium-bodied, elegant and lively in the mouth, the palate is chock-full of bright and crunchy red and black fruits, finishing long and earthy."
