We have a fantastic back vintage of the Condrieu from Domaine de Monteillet, and 2019 is a great example among the best vintages of all time here. The Villard family has owned Domaine de Monteillet since the 17th century, with its most famous owner being Louis Hector, Duke of Villard, Marshal of France for Louis XIV from 1653 to 1734. In 1741 the ancestor of Stephan Montez purchased the Domaine with money from being a master carpenter and cooper, setting the Domaine up for its modern-day production. Today, the very talented Stephane Montez operates the estate, which covers 38 hectares over four different appellations.
The Condrieu is on par with the best of the vintage and comes from the heart of the Condrieu appellation from a site called Chanson. The Viognier here grows on a steep and arid granite hillside with muscovite, giving it a beautiful mineral nuance. This is bottling comes from a selection of the best parcels here, and 2019 is a richer year, making for a delicious example. The Chanson is a serious Condrieu and a contender for one of the best of the vintage, and it is close to the quality of Guigals La Doriane at a fraction of the pricing. We have a limited amount at this special pricing, and these are the only bottles available in the USA right now. We only have two cases of this rare wine, so grab one before they are gone!
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points! "Just bottled before the harvest, after spending 23 months in demi-muid (33% new), the single vineyard 2019 Condrieu Chanson offers a deeper, richer style in its honeyed peach, apricot, toasted bread, and spice-like aromas and flavors. Despite the longer élevage, it shows barely any oak and has remarkable freshness and one heck of a great finish. It's another sexy, seamless, fruit bomb of a Condrieu that could come from nowhere else!"
Decanter (Matt Walls MW) 95 points! "Remarkably good acidity and depth of fruit. Not quite as elegant as some years, but very good for the vintage. Very rich, round and opulent, and the alcohol is perceptible, but it's a big, bold, rich treat. 22 months maturation in demi-muid (with a small percentage of new oak) in order to ready the wine for long ageing in bottle. (Drink between 2022-2027)"
