Clemens Busch is a 5th generation winemaker and the leading biodynamic producer in the Mosel. Working in Pünderich between the middle and lower Mosel Clemens tends the Vineyard of Marienburg made up of many parcels. These parcels were over sighted by the committee tasked with classifying the area and lumped them together, many in different locations and different qualities, under one name, Marienburg. Clemens has taken steps to revitalize the "lost" parcels by using their names given before the classification, tapping into their unique individuality. Clemens acquired many of his vineyards from people that were tired of working the treacherous terrain, and as a result, Clemens is the sole producer of many of these vineyards. There are three types of slate that the vines are grown on depending on the parcel: grey, blue, and red. Every kind of slate shows its self in the wine very differently. For example, the Fahrlay parcel is a small waterside parcel and is the only location for the blue slate in Marienburg and imbues a boisterous minerality to the wine, while Felsterrasse is from gray slate and is lighter with more finesse at a younger age. Clemens Busch's wines are known for their extreme longevity and become magnificent with age.
This is the first time we have been able to offer the Felsterrasse, which comes from five very steep terraced parcels planted on gray slate, which are average 70 years old. It is a concentrated and powerful wine with beautiful elegance and sublime minerality. Felsterrasse, like many of the Clemens crus, is innately cerebral and otherworldy meant to be enjoyed very slowly, as it continues to evolve in the glass for hours. 2019 is another knockout vintage from Clemens Busch, and at the top of the list, this time is the Felsterrasse. The wines from Clemens Busch are some of our favorite white wines annually and some of the most intellectual wines we have ever come in contact with, and the 2019s are another heroic effort from this breathtaking producer.
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 98 points! "Bottled in mid-March, Busch's 2019 Marienburg Felsterrasse is open and refined on the very elegant, deep and aromatic bouquet that indicates perfectly ripe and lush, golden Riesling berries. Full-bodied, complex and silky on the palate, this is an elegant yet rich and powerful, firmly structured, crystalline and persistently salty (enormously salty!) Riesling from biblical old vines. The finish is very long and complex, with firm tannins and great aging capacity. From a mystical place, as Clemens used to say. "There is so much energy in this vineyard, where I prefer to be alone." Tasted at the domain in September 2020."
