2020 Antonin Guyon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes

$79.99
2020 Antonin Guyon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes

We just popped a bottle of the Clos de Chênes this past weekend, and it was sensational and genuinely one of the best buys for this vineyard. The 2020 Antonin Guyon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes comes from a prime 3.5-hectare parcel of 35–50-year-old vines on the upper slopes of Volnay's famed Clos des Chênes, known for producing some of the appellation's best wines. Domaine Antonin Guyon, founded in the 1960s and now run by Antonin's sons, Dominique and Michel, is a highly regarded family estate that farms over 50 hectares across the Côte d'Or, utilizing sustainable practices and traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques—hand-harvesting, cold maceration, and aging in 30–40% new French oak. The 2020 vintage was warm but balanced, yielding small berries with excellent concentration, ripe tannins, and preserved acidity. This Clos des Chênes offers precise red and black cherry fruit, floral lift, and firm mineral structure—built for 10–20 years in the cellar, but is pretty approachable now with sufficient aeration. It's one of the best buys not just for Volnay but premier cru Red Burgundy as a whole this vintage, and we have friendly pricing on a few cases that have just arrived. Highly recommended!

Burghound 91-94 points! "Much more subtle oak influence is present on the equally spicy and even more floral-suffused nose that blends notes of red raspberry with those of tea and dark cherry. There is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the energetic, sleek and tautly muscular flavors that possess excellent volume before terminating in a moderately austere, long and notably more complex finale. This is excellent though like all fine examples of Clos des Chênes, extended patience will be a virtue."
