An excellent Burgundy buy from an under-the-radar producer, the wines from Desaunay-Bissey are excellent yet don't have the pricing that comes with being in the limelight as many of the other worshiped producers of the region. Our first experience with this producer was the 1999 vintage, and it was an extraordinary revelation and an excellent vintage to learn about these wines. Wines from Desaunay-Bissey are uncommon in the US and are among the insiders Burgundy buys with exceptional holdings in Vosne-Romanee from old vines. The Domaine is operated by a father-in-law and son-in-law duo, working sustainably with a terroir-centric approach to their winemaking. One of the critical aspects of these wines is always ensuring the vineyard expression comes through, which is vital for a highly regarded vineyard like Beaux Monts. The Domaine vines in the Beaux Monts vineyard are over 80 years old, harvested by hand, and made with the old-school Burgundian approach that we don't see as much anymore, featuring a light extraction, natural yeast fermentation, and never more than 1/3 new oak. It is a very classically styled Red Burgundy and is stunning in 2020, showing an excellent balance of power and elegance.
Not only is this the best buy for Beaux Monts in 2020, but it is also one of the best Premier Cru Buys from the Cote de Nuits this vintage, with many producers asking for double, even triple the price for Beaux Monts. We currently have the only bottles of this wine available in the USA, and for the Burgundy devotee, this is a must.
