One of the Top Premier Crus of this vintage, the Montmains from Duplessis, is outstanding this vintage. The wines from Duplessis are rarely imported to the USA, and these are still the only bottles in the country. This is an exceptional, classic Chablis highly recommended for anyone who loves these vibrant, mineral-driven wines.
Gerard Duplessis is in our top five Chablis producers, and it is not every day that we get to offer wine from this small organic producer. Duplessis has been working in Chablis for five generations and is now under Lilian Duplessis' authority, who took over for his father, Gerard, in 1999. This small 8 Hectare Domaine is entirely organic and biodynamic, and significant effort is put into making the best wines possible. One of the favorites, Montmains, comes from two parcels planted on clay and limestone. It starts in stainless steel tank and is finished in oak barrels after six months. It is one of the domaines most age-worthy and powerful cuvees and is exceptional this vintage and one of the best wines from Duplessis this year, tied with the Montee de Tonnerre but, as Neil Martin notes below, a bit more concentrated. It is a very pure Chablis that shows the vineyard's unique characteristics and is made in a traditional unmarked style making for one of the best price-quality wines in Chablis. A rare wine, we have the only bottles of the 2020 Montmains available in the USA.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 92-94 points! "The 2020 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is more concentrated on the nose compared to the Montée de Tonnerre, showing traces of acacia honey, yellow flowers and nectarine. The palate is very well balanced and quite dense and weighty in the mouth, with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish. Superb."
